All About Beta Delta

  • About Beta Delta

The Beta Delta chapter of Gamma Phi Beta at Michigan State University was founded on June 3, 1944 by the Lansing and East Lansing Alumnae Chapter. The colonization was lead by Mary Potter Sharp of the Beta chapter and Elanor Faris Pickney of the Xi Chapter.

Helen S. Sand, a member of the Gamma Phi Beta International Council, recommended acceptance of the colony. The members of the Beta chapter initiated seventeen charter members into the Beta Delta chapter.

During the years at Michigan State University, the Beta Delta chapter has occupied a variety of residences. During World War II, the chapter lived in the current Psi Upsilon house at the north-west corner of Harrison and Grand River. The chapter also took residence in the current Lambda Chi Alpha house on Harrison for many years, as well as the Cherry Hill Apartments. Finally, in 1987, a new house was built on Michigan Avenue.

    Greek Week

Greek Week is the largest philanthropy event for the Greek community at Michigan State University. Every spring, fraternities and sororities team up to compete in a number of events:

    • Relay for Life: Greek Week is centered around raising money for the American Cancer Association. The Greek community hosts its own Relay for Life, which annually raises about $200,000. This is a time for our community members to come together for a great cause and focus on the importance of helping others.
    • MTV Night: This is a technical dance competition that each sorority-fraternity team competes in every Greek Week. All of the proceeds from this event benefit the American Cancer Society.
    • Battle of the Bands: Each sorority-fraternity team form a band and compete against the other teams onstage at the Auditorium. Once again, all of the proceeds from this event benefit ACS.
    • Songfest: This is the final event of Greek Week, a song and dance competition. Each team can have up to 40 participants on stage at a time. As always, proceeds benefit the ACS.

Gamma Phi Beta has won the overall competition in 2001, 2002, and most recently in 2008. In 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Gamma Phi Beta raised the most money for Relay For Life, the main focus of Greek Week! In 2010, our chapter raised $35,000 for the American Cancer Society.

         International Gamma Phi Beta

Just as our chapter at Michigan State University has an executive Board, International Gamma Phi Beta has an International Council which oversees as Gamma Phi Beta chapters throughout the country and keeps our International Organization running strong. This International Council is composed of seven officers.

    Regional structure:

Gamma Phi Beta divides its alumnae and collegiate chapters geographically into regions. It is very helpful to utilize other chapters in your region for advice, help, and collaboration for new ideas and events.

The Beta Delta chapter is in Region 4, which includes Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. Other Chapters in Region 4 include:
